Jo-Ann Elvery

I work at St James Anglican Church, Berala, in cross-cultural ministry. Through involvement English classes and easy English Bible studies, I've had the privilege of getting to know and sharing God's word with many migrants and refugees. However, three years ago, when a family of asylum seekers moved into the same street as our church, I discovered how little I knew about the plight of asylum seekers and how to help them. I found myself drawn into their world and circle of friends. Though I've made many mistakes, it's been a joy seeing God working in their lives.

What do refugees need?

We often say, “There’s no place like home”. For most refugees, their new country will not be thought of as ‘home’ for a long time. Most would choose to stay in their country if they could. Many of those fleeing war-torn Syria say their greatest wish is to be able to one day go back to a Syria at peace.
