7 tips for giving away an evangelistic book

One of the best and simplest ways to share the gospel with someone is to put a good book in their hands.

Here are 7 tips to help you do that well:

  1. Read the book first and pray for the person you might be able to give it to.

  2. Work out what you will say when you give it to them, and how you will say it. Don’t be apologetic or hesitant, as if you are doing something hurtful—you are trying to help them. Rather, be warmly enthusiastic about the book and let them know why you think it is worth reading.

  3. Keep another copy of the book, so that you can familiarise yourself with some of the key arguments or points made in it—things that struck you as significant.

  4. About a week after giving the book, ask your friend how they are finding it. If they haven’t picked it up, don’t panic and don’t pressure them. Just move the conversation onto something else. You’ve given them a gentle nudge just by asking.

  5. Ask your friend specific questions about what you personally found compelling in the book (see step 3); e.g. How did you find his answer to the question: ‘Why did Jesus die?’ Work hard at: asking questions that are open ended and letting your friend express himself or herself; listening to what they really think; not launching into a monologue.

  6. Have in mind some bridging questions that take you from the book into a more general dialogue about Christianity and their response. For example: “Has the book helped you identify some major questions you have about Christianity?” or “If there were one or two major hurdles you needed to overcome before really embracing Christianity, what would they be?” or “Have you come to that place in your life where you know for certain God’s acceptance?”

  7. Keep praying!
