Ministry of the Month: Leadership Resources International

Shining a monthly spotlight on a ministry that we thank God for.
Recently the Matthias Media team sat in our meeting room listening intently to an American visitor named Craig Parro.
Craig was basically ‘in transit’—stopping off briefly in Sydney, on his way from Chicago to Papua New Guinea to spend a week training a small group of pastors in biblical preaching—“how to preach the word of God with the heart of God”.
One of the first things Craig told us was stunning: that of the 3.5 million or so pastors around the world, it is estimated that 3 million of them have had little or no formal training at all. None.
Craig works with LRI—Leadership Resources International—which is an organization seeking to address that problem.
Throughout Asia, Africa, and the Americas, Leadership Resources equips small groups of national pastors. They work closely with the same group of pastors for about 2 weeks per year over 4 years, allowing deep friendships to form.
But here’s where it gets really exciting and strategic—these pastors multiply the training by equipping fellow pastors and church leaders in their own country.
With the Bible as their textbook, LRI’s Training National Trainers (TNT) program teaches pastors…
How to Preach: expanding the pastors’ knowledge and developing their skills to more effectively study, teach and preach God’s Word. The training emphasizes the basics of Bible interpretation (hermeneutics) and the importance of faithful Biblical exposition.
How to Pastor: embracing a biblical model of ministry that centres on the heart of God and includes concepts such as servant leadership, humility and vulnerability, multiplication of other leaders, and the New Covenant ministry.
So LRI’s goal is not merely to train a few pastors, but to launch indigenous training movements in a multitude of countries.
